National Metallurgical Development Centre, Jos was established in 1973 as the Testing Laboratory of the defunct Nigerian Steel Development Authority (NSDA) to specifically handle the analysis of raw materials for the then proposed steel plants.

National Metallurgical Development Centre is a Federal Government Parastatal under the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. It is a Research Organization with the mandate to undertake researches aimed at upgrading the qualities of Nigeria Ores for Steel and other Metallurgical productions, particularly through beneficiation of Local Iron Ore and other Solid Minerals.
